BBC6 revolt

Been an interesting day watching the backlash against the BBCs potential closure of 6 music, a station with a niche but very loyal following (guess I include myself within that).

By 10am, the save6music hashtag was in full swing and 0.2% of all tweets worldwide concerned this topic.

The protest at times seemed to almost verge into panic as fans of the station suddenly realised they were going back to the dark ages of Radio 1's mockney tones and teen targeting or Radio 2's endorsement of only the most MOR major label endorsed dross.

Did the BBC really not understand the 6 music audience? do they care? is this merely a political stunt to ward off the incoming Government to make any further cut backs?

All I know is that there won't be a commercial station producing the indepth and niche content 6 music has provided since it's creation. If Absolute want to prove me wrong with a 5 part documentary on the state on minimal techno then I more than welcome it but to say it looks likely that a commercial rival will grab the now vancant territory left behind by the BBC's new strategy is very optimistic.
